Army School of Physical Training

Home of the RAPTC Museum

The Royal Army Physical Training Corps has been based in Aldershot, home of the British Army, since its formation as the Army Gymnastic Staff in 1861.

Originally based in a gymnasium on Wellington Lines, the AGS HQ moved to its present site when a new gymnasium was completed in 1894. This was later renamed Fox Gym in honour of Lt Colonel Sir G.M Fox, the Inspector of Physical Training at the time. This is still the main gymnasium used by the RAPTC.

Over the following decades a number of other gymnasiums, classrooms, and sporting and training facilities were added to what became known as the Army School of Physical Training. Whilst the Corps maintained locations around the country and worldwide, the ASPT remained its primary training centre for new APTC Instructors.

The ASPT of today hosts the HQ of the RAPTC and the Army Sports Control Board as well as the staff of the School itself. It regularly runs All-Arms Physical Training Instructor and RAPTC Instructor training courses, as well as other Army and sporting courses and events.
